Big Poplar Sphinx

Big Poplar Sphinx, also called Modest Sphinx (Pachysphinx modesta, Hodges # 7828), family Sphingidae, Fermilab, DuPage County, Illinois, 1985 I found this moth dying inside of a service building in the summer of 1985.

Big Poplar Sphinx, also called Modest Sphinx (Pachysphinx modesta, Hodges # 7828), family Sphingidae, Fermilab, DuPage County, Illinois, 2 July 2007 This is the first Big Poplar Sphinx that I have seen here since the one photographed above, 22 years ago!  It is a very large moth.  For reference, the concrete strip in this photo is 2.5 inches wide, so the moth with wings spread is a bit over 5 inches.  I found two more, sitting near one another on a building in 2008, so these are apparently not uncommon here in the Chicago area.
