Pandorus Sphinx

Pandorus Sphinx

Pandorus Sphinx (Eumorpha pandorus) Hodges #7859
Fermilab, Kane County, IL, 18 August 2009

This beautiful sphinx moth has about a 4 inch wingspan.  It is a fairly common sphinx moth in the Chicago area, feeding on wild grape vine, but always impressive to find.  Given the date of finding this adult, it appears that like many of our large sphinx moths which overwinter as a pupa in the ground, it has two generations per year.
